Boise Tech Boom: Micron's $50B Bet Fuels Idaho's Innovation Surge
National Desk
May 2, 2026
Boise's tech ecosystem is exploding, anchored by Micron Technology's $50 billion investment to build the first new U.S. memory manufacturing fab in two decades. The project, focused on advanced DRAM for AI applications with production slated for 2027, will create 2,000 direct high-tech jobs in semiconductor engineering, process engineering and AI infrastructure, plus more than 15,000 indirect roles by 2030.[1] Idaho's tech wages have led the nation with a 26% rise over 10 years, including a 10.3% single-year jump in Boise, where median IT specialist pay hits $112,444.[1]
The Treasure Valley now hosts about 3,800 tech firms generating $7 billion in economic impact, employing nearly 50,000 people with a projected 13.7% growth over the next decade.[2][4] Standouts include Keynetics, Idaho's largest private tech company and parent of global retailer ClickBank; Balihoo, a Boise-founded leader in local marketing automation serving Geico and Aflac; Cradlepoint in wireless networking; and Clearwater Analytics in fintech.[1][2] Software developer jobs surged 28.89% statewide, while other computer occupations like network architecture jumped 56.54%, fueled by Micron's ripple effect of satellite offices and vendors.[1]
Micron's move earned Idaho the 2023 Golden Shovel Award from Area Development Magazine and was named a 2022 Manufacturing Project of the Year.[6] Boise's appeal intensifies with living costs 11.2% below Portland and 13.9% under Denver, short commutes and outdoor access in the Treasure Valley, attracting early- to mid-career pros in hardware, AI and manufacturing.[1] As Idaho's unemployment holds near 3.5%, the sector's hybrid remote and skilled roles position Boise as a western tech hub rivaling bigger metros.[3]
