Kelvin Speed was taken into custody Monday, April 21, marking a 24-hour arrest following the shooting death of Chaddrick Thomas, 39, in the 1500 block of Warrior Road on Monday, April 20. The Birmingham Police Department's VCAT team secured the arrest as part of an intensive investigation into the fatal incident. Speed now faces capital murder charges—the state's most serious felony—along with counts of attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, all related to Thomas' death.
The speed of the arrest underscores the Birmingham Police Department's commitment to violent crime intervention. Speed was initially placed on a 48-hour felony extension at the Birmingham City Jail while charges were processed. He has since been transferred to the Jefferson County Jail, where he is being held without bond pending trial.
The case is part of a troubling week for Birmingham violence. On the same day Speed was arrested, police also took into custody 24-year-old De'Toi Freeman and 31-year-old Akil Williams in connection with the shooting death of 18-year-old Imahd Gee, which occurred Saturday, April 18, in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue West. Williams was charged with murder, while Freeman faces a charge of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
