Birmingham Barons Unveil Regions Field Expansion Plans
National Desk
April 21, 2026
Regions Field, the 8,500-seat home of the Birmingham Barons since its April 10, 2013, opening, is set for major upgrades to enhance visitor experiences, as initially reported by ABC 33/40.[2] The Double-A Chicago White Sox affiliate, which moved from Hoover's Regions Park after 25 seasons, revealed plans including new AirFlow Mesh seats in the rebranded Dread River Lounge and extended foul ball netting around the ballpark.[1][2] These improvements, completed ahead of the 2020 season's April 9 Opening Night, build on the $64 million facility's role in spurring downtown Birmingham's revitalization adjacent to 19-acre Railroad Park.[3][5][8]
Constructed by a Robins & Morton and A.G. Gaston joint venture with HKS architecture, the 245,434-square-foot stadium features 23 luxury suites, a 360-degree concourse, beer garden, family fun park, and youth sports zone, offering views of the city skyline, UAB, Children's of Alabama, Vulcan statue, and Red Mountain.[5][7] Funded largely by a 3.5% Birmingham lodging tax hike, the project broke ground February 2, 2012, transforming the Southside neighborhood and supporting local businesses.[1][4][6][8] The Barons' leadership emphasized these additions would benefit fans for years.[2]
Since relocating to downtown from Hoover in 2013, Regions Field—capacity 6,250 fixed seats plus 2,250 general admission—has anchored Birmingham's sports scene, fostering economic growth in a city long tied to baseball history.[3][5] While Rickwood Field, America's oldest ballpark and Barons' historic site, eyes its own improvements, Regions Field's upgrades reaffirm the team's commitment to modern, intimate Southern League baseball.[9] Alabama fans from Birmingham to the Black Belt can expect heightened excitement at this crown jewel.
