The Big 12 Conference finalized a five-year private capital agreement with RedBird and Weatherford Capital, a first for major college sports. League presidents and chancellors ratified the deal last week. The agreement, termed the "RedBird Business Development Partnership," features three main components. The deal provides an initial capital infusion of at least $12.5 million to the Big 12 conference office for commercial development and business growth. It also offers each member school an optional $30 million capital credit line. Finally, the partnership establishes a strategic business alliance aimed at future media rights negotiations. Commissioner Brett Yormark stated the capital partners will not hold ownership in the league, and the deal does not alter conference operations or governance. Gerry Cardinale, RedBird's founder and chief investment officer, has already facilitated over $130 million in revenue for the Big 12 in the next five years through prior business arrangements with entities like PayPal and Player's Era. The $12.5 million invested into the league office will target revenue-generating opportunities. The Big 12's current media rights agreement with ESPN and Fox concludes in 2031. RedBird's portfolio includes Paramount Global, which owns CBS and is expected to acquire TNT, both significant broadcasters in college sports. Schools have one year to decide on accepting the $30 million credit line, which carries an interest rate below 10%.
