Pinellas County Commissioners Reduce Property Tax Rate for Fifth Time in Six Years

Pinellas County residents will see a reduced countywide property tax rate for the fifth time in six years, following a vote by the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) on Thursday. The BCC approved the tentative Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, which includes a $6.026 million reduction in countywide property taxes from the originally proposed budget.

This decision provides taxpayer relief amidst rising costs, a key concern for many local households. The budget maintains essential local funding for Weedon Island and Shell Key preserves, ensuring these natural assets continue to receive support.

Commissioners achieved the tax reduction through various budget efficiencies. These included keeping reserves flat and adjusting parking fees, alongside other measures identified by the Commission and County staff. The approved budget funds core services vital to daily life in Pinellas County, such as public safety, road and bridge maintenance, county parks, and community programs.

The budget also allocates investments for future growth and infrastructure. These include transportation and stormwater infrastructure improvements, beach nourishment projects, and the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of county buildings and critical assets.

The County budget represents less than one-third of a resident's total property tax bill. Other agencies and functions, including the school system, municipalities, and the transit authority, account for the remainder of property taxes, as they do not fall under County purview.

The Commission will hold a second public hearing on September 24 to adopt the final tax rates and budget. The new fiscal year officially begins on October 1.
