Bass deploys LAPD surge across San Fernando Valley after burglary spree

National Desk
April 19, 2026
Mayor Karen Bass directed the Los Angeles Police Department to surge resources along Ventura Boulevard and surrounding Valley neighborhoods after a violent week of break-ins that have rattled residents and business owners alike. Six homes were burglarized across the San Fernando Valley in just seven days, with one Hollywood Hills resident suffering minor injuries when she was assaulted by intruders discovered in her home. The incidents also included an attempted break-in at the residence of actor Dylan Sprouse early Friday morning, drawing attention to the scope of the criminal activity. Police have identified organized burglary crews operating from South L.A. and South America as the primary suspects, employing sophisticated surveillance methods to target high-value properties. According to investigators, the crews pre-surveil homes using hidden cameras placed in flower beds and other concealed locations to monitor residents' movements. Burglars have also been documented following residents from upscale restaurants to assess their vehicles and identify potential targets, officials said. Bass's directive includes a comprehensive enforcement strategy aimed at disrupting the burglary operations. The LAPD will deploy mobile license plate readers in high-risk areas, position patrol vehicles in high-visibility locations, and conduct air support patrols across the Valley. The department is also holding weekly burglary meetings with detectives and collaborating with specialized divisions including the Robbery Homicide Division and Commercial Crimes Division to investigate high-value loss cases. The burglary surge extends beyond residential targets. Cara Vana Coffee Shop in North Hollywood has been hit three times in five months, underscoring the breadth of criminal activity affecting the Valley's business community. Senior Lead Officers will conduct increased community meetings to discuss home security measures and neighborhood watch initiatives, with Bass emphasizing that residents deserve to feel safe in their homes. "The City has zero tolerance for these recent burglaries," Bass stated in an official announcement.
