Axiom Mission 3 Crew Returns to Earth

The Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3) crew, including Türkiye's first astronaut Alper Gezeravcı, successfully returned to Earth on Friday, February 9, 2024, splashing down off the coast of Florida. The crew had spent 21 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS), conducting various scientific experiments and educational outreach.

The Dragon spacecraft, named Freedom, undocked from the ISS on February 7, 2024, after a slight delay due to unfavorable weather conditions at the splashdown sites. The crew's return marks the completion of a significant mission for Axiom Space, a private company aiming to build its own commercial space station.

While the mission itself was a global endeavor, the safe return of the crew to Florida waters has local implications, particularly for the recovery teams and support staff based in the region, including Jacksonville's maritime community. The successful splashdown highlights the ongoing role of Florida, and by extension, Jacksonville on the First Coast, in supporting space exploration and recovery operations.

The Ax-3 mission was commanded by former NASA astronaut Michael López-Alegría, with Walter Villadei of the Italian Air Force and Marcus Wandt of the European Space Agency also on board. Their work on the ISS included research into human physiology in microgravity, materials science, and technology demonstrations.
