Astros' Altuve Out Indefinitely With Wrist Injury After HBP

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros received devastating news Monday as team doctors confirmed second baseman Jose Altuve suffered a fractured right wrist after being hit by a pitch during Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The incident occurred in the seventh inning when Blue Jays reliever Chad Green's fastball rode inside, striking Altuve on the wrist. Altuve immediately left the game in visible pain.
Manager Joe Espada addressed the media Monday, stating, "This is a tough blow for us. Jose is the heart and soul of this team, and losing him for any amount of time is difficult." Espada did not provide a specific timeline for Altuve's return, stating that the team will consult with specialists to determine the best course of treatment. Initial reports suggest Altuve will be sidelined for at least six to eight weeks, but a more definitive timeline will be established following further evaluation.
Altuve, a former MVP and multiple-time All-Star, is off to a slow start this season, batting .245 with two home runs and six RBIs. However, his value to the Astros extends beyond his offensive production. His leadership and presence in the clubhouse will be sorely missed.
The Astros are currently exploring internal options to fill the void at second base. Utility player Mauricio Dubon is expected to receive the bulk of the playing time at second base in Altuve's absence. The team may also consider calling up a prospect from their minor league system.
