Artisan Cheese Company Closes Doors Permanently After 14.5 Years in Sarasota's Rosemary District

Sarasota’s Artisan Cheese Company, a fixture in the Rosemary District for 14.5 years, closed its doors permanently on Wednesday. Owner Louise Converse cited declining sales and accumulated debt as primary reasons for the closure of the shop located at 550 Central Ave.

Converse announced the closure on the Artisan Cheese Company Facebook page, detailing a challenging financial period. Sales dropped 40% this year, with summer sales described as "staggeringly lower." Converse stated she became "over-leveraged" while trying to keep the shop open through the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent years.

The shop faced a similar crisis in May 2025. An angel investor stepped in, and a public GoFundMe campaign raised more than $50,000, allowing the business to avoid closure at that time. Despite this capital infusion, the shop continued to struggle, accumulating rent arrears.

Converse found two potential buyers for the shop in the past two months. However, the landlord approved a restaurant for the space instead, a decision Converse attributed to her rent arrears. "The space will end up going to a restaurant, as the restaurant won the landlord’s approval over the cheese shop, as is their prerogative, as I am in rent arrears," Converse wrote.

Artisan Cheese Company hosted a "yard sale" on Tuesday and Wednesday to clear out remaining inventory, including perishables, forks, and plates. Staff were present at the sale to say goodbye to customers. Converse noted the "outpouring of love" from the community in a video announcing the sale.
