Apple's Hardware Chief John Ternus to Succeed Tim Cook as CEO

National Desk
April 22, 2026
Apple has officially ended months of speculation about its next leader. On April 20, the company announced that John Ternus, 51, will become CEO effective September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook after nearly 15 years at the helm.[1][2] Cook will transition to executive chairman of the board, replacing Arthur Levinson.[2] The board unanimously approved the succession, which the company described as the result of a long-term planning process.[1] Ternus brings deep operational expertise to the role. A mechanical engineer who joined Apple in 2001, he has spent a quarter-century at the company focused on product development.[1][2] As senior vice president of hardware engineering since 2021, he has overseen the development of flagship products including the iPhone, Mac, and iPad.[4] Industry insiders had long viewed him as Cook's most likely successor, particularly after Jeff Williams, once considered the natural heir apparent, stepped down from operational responsibilities in July 2025.[3] The leadership transition reflects stability amid industry transformation. Cook will remain CEO through the summer to work closely with Ternus on the handover, ensuring continuity during the changeover.[1] As executive chairman, Cook will continue assisting the company with certain aspects of operations, including engaging with policymakers worldwide.[1] This arrangement allows Apple to maintain experienced leadership while empowering Ternus to chart a new direction. Ternus assumes control as Apple navigates an increasingly competitive artificial intelligence landscape. The former University of Pennsylvania swimmer is positioned to bring stability to the company as it pursues new product categories, including smart glasses under development.[6] His hardware engineering background and quarter-century tenure position him to build upon Cook's legacy while leading Apple's next chapter of innovation and growth.
