Alaska Airlines' Record $15B Boeing Order Ignites WA Aerospace Boom

Boeing and Alaska Airlines announced the historic order on Jan. 7, 2026, marking the Seattle carrier's biggest investment in new planes as it builds a global network from its West Coast hubs. The purchase includes 105 737-10 airplanes—the largest 737 MAX variant—with options for 35 more, plus five 787-10 widebodies to support long-haul routes to Europe and Asia. The order ramps up activity at Boeing's Everett factory north of Seattle, where 737 MAX final assembly lines are expanding to meet surging demand. Valued at roughly $15 billion based on list prices, it bolsters Washington's aerospace sector—employing over 140,000 workers statewide—and comes as Boeing's MAX backlog tops 4,763 aircraft as of early 2025. Half the new jets will modernize Alaska's single-aisle fleet, backbone of its Western U.S. operations, while the rest enable 12 new long-haul destinations by 2030 from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

This vote of confidence arrives two years after a Jan. 2024 door plug blowout on an Alaska 737 MAX 9 mid-flight from Portland, Oregon, which grounded dozens of jets and drew FAA scrutiny. Alaska's first major Boeing buy since then surpasses its 2022 order of 52 MAX aircraft and 71 prior unfilled slots, celebrating 60 years of partnership.
