MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Day.News) — Alabama tourists unleashed a spending frenzy in the first quarter of 2026, posting a 12% jump in expenditures that propelled the state to new heights, according to initial reports from the Alabama Daily News. Driven by sun-soaked escapes to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach resorts alongside blockbuster events in Birmingham, the surge underscores a tourism engine that's doubled in scale over the past decade. Officials credit packed hotels, state parks and campgrounds for the windfall, building on 2024's statewide record of $23.9 billion in visitor spending that drew 29 million guests and sustained 248,590 jobs.[1]
The Gulf Coast led the charge, with Baldwin County's white-sand beaches shattering records yet again. Lodging spending across Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan hit $923 million in 2025, up from $871 million the prior year, and early 2026 data signals continued acceleration amid steady retail sales topping $1.42 billion.[2][3][5] "This is the result of a deliberate, decade-long strategy," tourism leaders emphasized, pointing to family vacations from across the Southeast that have more than doubled beach revenue since 2015. Every $140,726 in travel dollars generates one direct job, amplifying impacts statewide.[1]
Birmingham's cultural pull amplified the momentum, drawing crowds to festivals and venues that complemented coastal highs. The industry's 7.3% slice of Alabama's total production in 2024 ballooned to over $7.9 billion in earnings, with $4.4 billion direct, setting the stage for Q1 2026's breakout.[1] As Gov. Kay Ivey noted in prior announcements, such records fuel broader growth, mirroring 2025's economic development boom of $14.6 billion in investments and 9,388 jobs.[4] Alabama's beaches, parks and urban hotspots show no signs of slowing.
