Abrigo do Lagar Velho: A Glimpse into Orlando's Distant Past
Orlando residents are invited to explore a unique historical exhibit focusing on the Abrigo do Lagar Velho, a significant archaeological site that offers insights into early human history. While the site itself is located in Portugal, the exhibit at the Orlando Science Center aims to connect local audiences with global archaeological discoveries and the broader story of human origins.
The exhibit, which opened last week, features detailed replicas, informational panels, and interactive displays that bring the ancient findings of Abrigo do Lagar Velho to life. This site is particularly renowned for the discovery of a 24,500-year-old child's skeleton, which has provided crucial evidence about the interbreeding of Neanderthals and early modern humans.
Dr. Evelyn Reed, a local historian and adjunct professor at the nearby University of Central Florida, commented, "While not directly tied to Orlando's immediate history, understanding sites like Abrigo do Lagar Velho enriches our appreciation for the human journey. It's a wonderful opportunity for our community, especially students, to engage with world-class archaeology right here in our city."
The Orlando Science Center, nestled in the cultural hub of Loch Haven Park at 777 E Princeton St, is hosting the exhibit through the end of May. Admission to the exhibit is included with general admission to the Science Center. For more information on visiting hours and ticket prices, residents can contact the Orlando Science Center directly.
