A Tribute To Mr. Ed

Orlando residents are invited to a special community gathering this Saturday, April 12, 2026, to honor the memory of Edward "Mr. Ed" Thompson, a beloved figure in the College Park neighborhood, one of Orlando's historic enclaves, for over five decades. The tribute will take place at the College Park Community Center, located at 2393 Elizabeth Avenue, starting at 2:00 PM.

Mr. Thompson, who passed away peacefully last week at the age of 88, was a familiar face to generations of College Park families. Known for his unwavering dedication to local youth sports, he coached countless Little League baseball and Pop Warner football teams at the iconic Dubsdread Sports Complex. His distinctive whistle and encouraging words were a staple at games and practices, shaping the lives of many young athletes in the area.

Beyond the playing fields, Mr. Ed was a passionate advocate for community beautification. He was a founding member of the College Park Garden Club and could often be seen tending to the public flower beds along Edgewater Drive, a tree-lined thoroughfare in this vibrant neighborhood, always with a friendly wave and a story to share. His efforts contributed significantly to the welcoming atmosphere that defines the neighborhood.

The tribute will feature remarks from former players, fellow community volunteers, and local officials, including District 3 Commissioner Robert F. Stuart. Attendees are encouraged to share their favorite memories of Mr. Ed. Light refreshments will be served, and a memorial photo display will be set up, showcasing his many contributions to Orlando.

This event is a chance for the community to come together and celebrate the life of a man who truly embodied the spirit of College Park. His legacy of service, mentorship, and community pride will undoubtedly continue to inspire for years to come.
