5 Questions With The October 2024 #DryTortugas Photo Contest Winner

Key West residents often find themselves drawn to the natural beauty surrounding our island, and few places capture the imagination quite like Dry Tortugas National Park. Each month, the park hosts a photo contest, and the October 2024 winner, local photographer Maria Rodriguez, recently shared insights into her award-winning shot.

Rodriguez, a familiar face at the Key West Art Center, captured a stunning image of a masked booby in flight against the backdrop of Fort Jefferson. Her photograph, titled "Island Guardian," earned her top honors and will be featured on the park's official social media channels throughout the month.

We caught up with Rodriguez at her studio on Duval Street in Old Town to ask her five questions about her passion for photography and her connection to the Dry Tortugas:

1. What inspired your winning photograph, "Island Guardian"?
"I've always been fascinated by the wildlife out at the Dry Tortugas. The masked boobies, with their striking appearance, are particularly captivating. I spent hours observing them, waiting for that perfect moment when one took flight. The fort in the background just added to the sense of history and protection."

2. How often do you visit Dry Tortugas National Park?
"As often as I can! It's a truly magical place. The ferry ride itself is an experience, and once you're there, it feels like you've stepped into another world. The snorkeling, the history, and of course, the birds – there's always something new to discover."

3. What advice do you have for aspiring nature photographers in Key West?
"Patience is key. And know your subject. The more you understand the behavior of the animals or the light of the landscape, the better your chances of capturing something truly special. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with different angles and perspectives."

4. What's your favorite part about living and working as a photographer in Key West?
"The light here is incredible. It's unlike anywhere else. And the community of artists and photographers is so supportive. There's a constant source of inspiration, whether it's the vibrant street scenes, the historic architecture, or the stunning sunsets."

5. What's next for you and your photography?
"I'm currently working on a series focusing on the lesser-known marine life around the Keys. There's so much beauty beneath the surface that often goes unseen. I'm hoping to bring some of that hidden world to light."

Rodriguez's winning photograph reminds us of the unique treasures just a short trip from our shores and the talent that thrives within our close-knit Conch community. Congratulations, Maria!
