28 Feb Shungite, The 2 Billion Year Old Mineral
While Naples residents often discuss local happenings, a recent conversation at the Naples Diner on Main Street in Old Naples turned to a rather ancient topic: Shungite, a mineral reportedly two billion years old. Though not a local discovery, the discussion sparked curiosity among those gathered for their morning coffee.
The mineral, known for its unique composition, was the subject of an informal chat between long-time resident Martha Jenkins and visiting geologist Dr. Alan Peterson, who was in town visiting family. Dr. Peterson explained that Shungite is primarily found in the Karelia region of Russia and is notable for containing fullerenes, a crystalline form of carbon.
While Shungite itself doesn't have a direct connection to Naples' geology or economy, the conversation highlights the diverse interests of this Gulf Coast community. It's not uncommon for topics ranging from the latest City Council meeting to ancient minerals to be debated over a stack of pancakes at local establishments like the Naples Diner.
