Key West Adopt-a-Drain Program Reduces Flooding
Key West launched an Adopt-a-Drain program asking residents and businesses to monitor and clear debris from storm drains near their homes during the rainy season.
Volunteers remove leaves, litter, and other materials that block drainage and carry pollutants into canals and nearshore waters. Participants can adopt drains individually or organize neighborhood groups to cover multiple grates.
City officials said residents spot problem areas better than municipal crews can track. The volunteer effort supplements the city's maintenance schedule between scheduled cleanings.
Residents and businesses can sign up by completing a fillable PDF application on the city's website. Volunteers select specific drains near their homes or workplaces to monitor throughout the rainy season.
