BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Walmart announced a $200 million expansion to its existing distribution center at 5801 S.W. Regional Airport Blvd., aiming to enhance logistics capacity in Northwest Arkansas. The project, first reported by the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, will create 300 new positions focused on logistics operations and advanced technology integration. Situated across from a 1.2 million-square-foot facility opened two decades ago, the expansion builds on Walmart's longstanding presence in Bentonville, where it employs thousands at its global headquarters.

The upgrade aligns with Walmart's broader strategy to strengthen supply chain capabilities in the Midwest region, as stated by company spokeswoman Anne Hatfield in 2017 comments on similar plans. While specifics on timelines remain under wraps, the investment comes amid Bentonville's transformation into a tech and logistics powerhouse, anchored by Walmart's $350-acre headquarters campus -- Arkansas' largest corporate project. That development, nearing completion, features 20 buildings, 40 miles of biking trails and community amenities, drawing talent to the area.

Local economic leaders anticipate the jobs -- many in high-demand tech roles -- will boost Benton County's workforce, where unemployment hovers low amid rapid growth. The expansion echoes Walmart's recent innovations, including its first Arkansas Market Fulfillment Center at Store 100 on 406 S.
