JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Jefferson County, including Birmingham and Hoover, effective immediately. Residents should finalize preparations for hazardous wind and moderate flooding rain. The watch was issued October 8 at 10:27 PM CDT and remains in effect.

Forecasts indicate peak winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. This could cause limited damage to structures like porches, carports, and unanchored mobile homes, along with broken tree limbs and some downed trees. Scattered power and communications outages are possible, and debris may make some roads impassable.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall totals are expected to be 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts, leading to potential moderate flooding. This could result in swollen rivers, overflowing small streams, and water entering some structures. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated, with some road and bridge closures. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed any flood watches and warnings.

Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more information and preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
