Sunshine Skyway Bridge Vehicle Fire: What We Know So Far

A vehicle fire on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge blocked northbound traffic Thursday evening, and officials say no injuries were reported. Here is what we know so far.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle was a Brinks truck and the fire was caused by a mechanical issue shortly before 6 p.m. No injuries were reported, and all northbound lanes of I-275 were blocked at the scene.

Drivers were urged to use caution because of smoke and emergency crews working on the bridge, according to FHP. The closure caused traffic delays heading out of Manatee County while responders handled the fire and cleared the roadway.

The response involved Florida Highway Patrol and other emergency crews at the scene, indicating a significant traffic-impacting incident on a major regional bridge corridor. In a separate Florida truck-fire incident in Miami-Dade, officials said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units extinguished the flames after all occupants had already exited the vehicle and no one was injured.

Dispatch records show prior incidents at this location on May 31, May 27 and May 10, 2026, all logged as other calls.
