Actor and comedian Jamie Foxx, 58, is discussing a serious health scare he experienced in 2023 that brought him close to death and profoundly influenced his creative outlook. The incident, which Foxx described as a brain bleed leading to a stroke, nearly cost him his life.
In an interview that aired Monday on "Good Morning America," Foxx told ABC News' Will Reeve that medical staff informed him his chances of survival were slim, with nurses calling him a "three percenter." He later visited the nurses who cared for him, calling his recovery a miracle.
Foxx credits his close friends and loved ones for his recovery, recounting a period of dependency where he used a wheelchair. This experience has reshaped his perspective on life and legacy, influencing his approach to comedy. "When we all go, it's how they speak your name. It's how they feel about you. So, I kind of keep that in the back of my head when I'm telling jokes," he said.
Following medical treatment and rehabilitation, Foxx feels more creative than ever with "unfinished business" to attend to. His latest project is the new Hulu standup special, "Take Care of Yourself." The special was filmed in Oakland, California, the site of his 1991 Bay Area Black Comedy Competition & Festival win.
In the special, Foxx shares the stage with his daughter, Anelise, highlighting her musical talents. "To be on stage with my little one, with my daughter, to have her on stage with me rocking, showing her musical talents, and she's basically a quiet person, but her showing her artistry, that feels good," Foxx said.
"Jamie Foxx: Take Care of Yourself" premieres Wednesday on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
