The City of Lyons was honored to be invited by Robert Tillman, Coalition Coordinator for Safe Kids Toombs, to participate in Reading Across America Week at Toombs Head Start. Throughout the week, city staff had the opportunity to visit classrooms and spend time reading with the students, creating meaningful moments with some of the community’s youngest learners. Each visit brought laughter, wonderful stories from the children, and plenty of sweet hugs. City Manager Jason Hall had a blast reading with the students, along with Community Development Director Jessica Barfield McCoy, who enjoyed sharing stories and spending time with the children. Near the end of the week, Assistant City Clerk Chaquandra Hudson joined the fun and was welcomed with open arms—some students even asked if she could come back and visit again. The City of Lyons was overjoyed to participate in the many opportunities to read with students during the week and to be part of such a positive experience in the community. Supporting literacy and connecting with young readers is an important part of building a strong future for our city. The City extends its sincere thanks to Toombs Head Start for welcoming us into their classrooms and to Safe Kids Toombs for the invitation. We are proud to be part of a community that celebrates learning and encourages a love of reading among our littlest residents.

Durango City Council Advances Fast-Track Housing Ordinance to Qualify for State Funding

"Durango, CO: Council voted to accept the introduction of an ordinance that would amend the city’s Land Use Development Code to comply with Proposition 123 regarding fast-track review for affordable housing projects.Proposition 123 is the primary projected funding source for various City of Durango housing projects and initiatives. State voters approved the measure in 2022, which created the State Affordable Housing Fund.  To be eligible to receive these funds, the city must adopt a fast-track approval process in which qualifying projects receive approval or denial within 90 days. The requirement to have a fast-track approval process begins Jan. 1, 2027, but state financial incentives will be available for jurisdictions that adopt such a process no later than June 30. Councilors on Tuesday accepted the introduction of the ordinance, which will be reviewed again at later meetings.Councilors held their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m. at council chambers, 949 East Second Ave., where they:Proclaimed the month of May as ALS awareness month. Heard an update from students with the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council. Updates included a suggestion to the council that the city hold a "lights out" day once a month, during which the city would turn off any non-essential lights. The advisory council also expressed interest in a mural project that would honor immigrants in the community.  Voted to adopt the Durango Impact and Resiliency Grant funding award recommendations, allocating $81,400 across seven projects. The $81,400 includes $32,800 from the Sustainability Programs budget and $48,600 from the Lodgers’ Tax Sustainable Tourism Marketing budget. Projects include scaling up commercial food waste diversion through Table to Farm Compost, affordable workforce housing support through Homesfund, and funding an outdoor kitchen for culturally relevant programs at Fort Lewis College.Introduced an ordinance that would authorize the conveyance of city-owned property at 1055 Avenida del Sol to Volunteers of America for the continued use as a community homeless shelter. The city has leased the 0.6-acre property to VOA for an annual fee of $1 to support families and individuals experiencing homelessness for more than 30 years. The volunteer organization pays for all operating and capital expenses associated with the site. The current facility requires significant renovations to maintain safety, functionality, and service capacity. The volunteer organization has requested ownership of the property to enable long-term investment, stabilize operations, and pursue additional funding opportunities that require site ownership.Voted to approve a resolution directing the city manager to provide publicly releasable information on the use of Flock cameras.Voted to approve an ordinance that would amend the Durango Code of Ordinances to increase the amount of available parking spaces in the City of Durango by prohibiting the parking or storage of all recreational vehicles, trailers, and crafts from parking along the public right-of-way for more than 72 hours in 7 days.WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!Do you have a comment, question, or suggestion?
