Wellington & Sheriff's Office Win E-Bike Safety Awards
The Village of Wellington and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office District 8 received four awards from the Safety Council of Palm Beach County for their work enforcing e-bike and motorized scooter safety.
The Safety Council presented the awards June 11 at its 40th Annual Traffic Safety Awards Luncheon, recognizing "Operation Moto Madness," an initiative launched after officials noticed increased use of e-bikes and scooters throughout Wellington.
PBSO District 8's Street Crime Unit, Traffic Unit, Community Policing Unit and Road Patrol earned an Enforcement Award. Deputy Juan Ramirez received an individual Enforcement Award. Village of Wellington Communications and PBSO Captain Nichole Addazio won Media Public Information Awards. PBSO District 8 Captain Mike Anderson received a Citizen on Patrol award. The Special Traffic Safety Initiatives award went to PBSO District 8's Matt DeJoy, Village of Wellington's Nicole Coates and Jenoptik.
The campaign combined enforcement with public education to help riders understand safety requirements and regulations. Captain Addazio created an educational video explaining the difference between e-bikes and e-motos, along with safety requirements for each.
Residents can find e-bike and e-moto safety information on the Village of Wellington website.
