A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Perry County, including Marion, by the NWS in Birmingham, AL, effective immediately for high winds up to 60 mph and major flooding; residents should complete preparations and seek safe shelter before hazardous conditions begin.
PERRY COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Perry County, specifically affecting Marion, effective immediately as of October 9 at 6:57 PM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. The warning is set to expire on October 10 at 3:00 AM UTC.
Residents should prepare for dangerous winds with peak gusts up to 60 mph. The NWS indicates a potential for winds ranging from 58 to 73 mph. Significant wind damage is anticipated, including damage to roofing, siding, and outbuildings. Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable. Large trees may be snapped or uprooted, potentially causing road impassability and scattered power outages. All efforts to protect life and property must be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before the wind becomes hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to major flooding. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and small streams could become dangerous. Floodwaters may enter numerous structures, and many evacuations and rescues are likely. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to take action will likely result in serious injury or loss of life. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area.
The NWS reports that the situation is currently unfavorable for tornadoes, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
