Dangerous rip currents are expected along Gulf-facing beaches, including Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and Bolivar Peninsula, through Saturday evening, October 10th. Swimmers are advised to exercise extreme caution and follow safety instructions from the National Weather Service.
Residents and visitors to Gulf-facing beaches are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX. Dangerous rip currents are expected through Saturday evening, October 10th.
This Moderate Severity alert is in effect for the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula. The statement was issued on October 9th at 11:19 PM CDT and remains active until 8:00 PM CDT on October 10th.
Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The National Weather Service advises individuals to swim near a lifeguard and to avoid swimming near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, the instruction is to relax and float, and not to swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and call or wave for help.
