Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Gulf Coast Beaches Until Friday Night
Dangerous rip currents are expected along Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and Bolivar Peninsula from Thursday morning until Friday night, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents and visitors to Gulf-facing beaches are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX. Dangerous rip currents are expected from Thursday, October 8, at 6:47 AM CDT until Friday, October 10, at 1:00 AM CDT.
This alert specifically impacts the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula. Rip currents pose a significant risk, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters.
The National Weather Service warns that the risk of strong rip currents will increase throughout Thursday and Friday, and there is a possibility this risk could be extended into Saturday.
If you plan to enter the water, swim near a lifeguard and avoid areas near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, the National Weather Service advises relaxing and floating. Do not swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
