Vance Says U.S. and Iran Made Progress in Talks; Trump's Support Remains Uncertain
Vice President Vance stated that the U.S. and Iran have achieved "a lot of progress" through their ongoing negotiations, but he expressed uncertainty about whether President Trump would sign any resulting agreement.
"It's not clear when or if that will happen," Vance said.
Iran's Foreign Ministry rejected Vance's characterization, stating that the two sides have not reached a formal agreement. The country's officials did not elaborate on the status of diplomatic discussions.
Vance's comments came amid intensifying military activity between the nations. The U.S. and Iranian armed forces exchanged fire in recent days. Iran also launched a ballistic missile directed at Kuwait, an American ally in the Persian Gulf region.
The simultaneous progression of negotiations and military escalation reflects the tenuous state of U.S.-Iran relations. The Trump administration has not publicly committed to any diplomatic framework, leaving the future of talks uncertain.
Vance did not specify which issues negotiators had addressed or provide details about the nature of the progress reported. Iran's public denial of an agreement contradicts the vice president's assessment, suggesting ongoing disagreement over the status of talks or their substance.
The missile launch into Kuwait represents a significant military action by Iran and signals its continued willingness to conduct operations in the region despite ongoing diplomatic discussions with the United States.
