Johnnie "DJ" Jones, a freshman offensive lineman for the University of Missouri football team, received a heart transplant late Wednesday at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, team officials confirmed.
Missouri football coach Eliah Drinkwitz stated Thursday that the surgery was successful. Jones is now recovering and Drinkwitz expressed gratitude to the medical team and the donor family for their "extraordinary gift." Drinkwitz asked for continued prayers for Jones, his family, the donor family and his caregivers.
Jones, 18, is a 6-foot-6, 305-pound offensive lineman from Venice, Florida. The team's staff discovered a heart issue during freshman intake this past summer. After observing Jones for two weeks without resolution, the team sought a second opinion, leading to his transfer to the Mayo Clinic.
