FCC Chairman Calls for Review of E-Rate Program

WASHINGTON D.C. — Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr has initiated a review of the E-Rate program, a federal subsidy designed to help schools and libraries pay for internet services. The program, which utilizes fees collected from consumers, supports public schools, some private schools, and libraries in managing their internet bills.

Carr advocated for ending the E-Rate program before his appointment to the FCC by former President Donald Trump. His current request for a review brings the program's structure and future under examination by the commission.

The E-Rate program, formally known as the Schools and Libraries Program of the Universal Service Fund, channels money from telecommunications fees to help educational institutions and libraries secure affordable internet access. The Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) administers the program under FCC oversight. It aims to ensure that all Americans have access to communications services, including those necessary for educational and informational purposes.
