Panama City Beach Police Suspend License Plate Reader Use

The Panama City Beach Police Department has suspended its use of the Flock Automated License Plate Reader (LPR) system immediately. The decision follows recent guidance from the Florida Department of Transportation regarding LPR cameras on state roadways and changes in the technology's use across Florida.

Police Chief Eusebio “JR” Talamantez stated the department will pause LPR use until clear statewide guidelines are established. He acknowledged LPR technology has aided in locating wanted individuals, recovering stolen vehicles, finding missing persons, investigating crimes, and managing large events.

Talamantez also recognized public concerns about privacy, data retention, information sharing, and the technology's application. "We have a responsibility to protect individual liberty and provide law enforcement with effective tools to protect our communities," Talamantez said. "Any technology we use must meet that standard."

The police department is working with Flock to remove the cameras from the jurisdiction. While some cameras may remain temporarily, the department ceased access to and use of the Flock system on September 1, 2026. The department remains committed to community protection, respecting privacy, and maintaining public trust.

Residents are asked for their patience during the camera removal process.
