Belle Glade residents might find a local connection to the Los Angeles Dodgers' postseason run through pitcher Tarik Skubal. Skubal, a recent trade acquisition for the Dodgers, delivered a strong performance in Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Braves on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2026, pitching in extreme heat at Dodger Stadium.
The game occurred under 103-degree temperatures, marking one of the hottest postseason games in Dodger Stadium history. Skubal pitched six innings, allowing only one run and retiring 15 consecutive batters. He struck out seven.
"It's amazing what your brain can do in certain circumstances and moments," Skubal said after the game. "It's amazing what you can control and kind of eliminate. So, I actually didn't think it was horrible when I was pitching." He acknowledged the heat, recalling a Little League game in 127-degree heat in Lake Havasu.
Skubal's performance met expectations for the Dodgers, who acquired him at the trade deadline. His fastball velocity increased, with five of his 15 fastest pitches this season occurring during the game, including one at 101.1 mph.
"That's why you acquire a guy like him," said Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas. Skubal's outing helped set the stage for the Dodgers' offense, which produced home runs from Teoscar Hernández, Kyle Tucker, and Max Muncy for a 5-3 victory.
After his exit, Skubal remained in the dugout to support his teammates. "The person that he is, the player that he is, the way he works, it just has been awesome," said Teoscar Hernández. Max Muncy added, "He was as advertised. It was really fun to see him go out there and do his thing." Skubal expressed willingness to pitch on short rest or in relief, demonstrating a team-first attitude.
