West Palm Beach officially recognized International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, 2026. Commissioner Sachs presented a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Baxter at the Board of County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The observance aims to raise awareness of drug overdose and reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorder.
The annual event remembers individuals who have died or suffered injury from drug overdose, acknowledging the grief of their families, friends, and communities. The proclamation stressed the need for greater understanding and compassion for those affected by substance use disorder, which the American Medical Association classifies as a brain disease.
By recognizing those impacted, the community increases public awareness of the disorder's effects and combats the stigma that discourages individuals from seeking treatment and recovery. Local leaders anticipate this recognition will encourage more open dialogue and support systems throughout West Palm Beach.
