Crescent Lake Toxic Algae Bloom: Health Alert
The Florida Department of Health in Putnam County issued a health alert Tuesday warning residents and visitors to avoid contact with Crescent Lake near Dunns Creek. A water sample collected May 12 detected harmful blue-green algae toxins in the lake.
Residents should not swim, wade, drink from, or operate personal watercraft in waters showing visible blooms. Anyone exposed to algae or discolored water should wash skin and clothing with soap and water immediately.
Pet owners must keep animals away from the area and provide alternative water sources. Boiling contaminated water will not eliminate toxins, so residents should not use affected water for cooking or cleaning dishes.
Blue-green algae thrive in warm, nutrient-rich, still water. While blooms can occur year-round, they peak in summer and fall. Fish fillets from the lake remain safe if rinsed, gutted, and cooked thoroughly. Residents should not eat shellfish from affected waters.
To report algae blooms, contact the Florida Department of Environmental Protection at 1-855-305-3903 or online. Anyone experiencing symptoms from algae exposure should call the Florida Poison Information Center at 800-222-1222. For other questions, contact DOH-Putnam at 386-326-3200.
