Cyclospora Outbreak Impacts Michigan Residents

A cyclospora outbreak has spread across the United States, affecting individuals in multiple states. Michigan has reported a high number of cases within the ongoing outbreak.

Michigan residents have described experiencing severe gastrointestinal symptoms following infection. One individual, Amy Watson of Clarkston, Michigan, recounted experiencing frequent bathroom visits, sometimes up to 20 times daily. Watson stated her symptoms began approximately one month ago and persisted for several weeks.

Watson initially attributed her symptoms to food poisoning. She received a diagnosis of cyclospora infection after seeking medical attention. Watson described her ongoing symptoms as debilitating, impacting her daily activities.

Public health officials are monitoring the outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued guidance regarding cyclospora infections. The parasite causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness. Individuals can contract cyclospora by consuming contaminated food or water.
