Job Title: Juvenile Detention Officer III Job ID: 1271 Department: MDCR - JUVENILE JUSTICE Salary: $47,795.00 - $76,985.00 Annually Opening Date: 02/09/2021 Closing Date: Continuous This is responsible protective and developmental care work supervising and guiding juveniles detained in a detention facility. Employees in this class are responsible for the direct care, custody, and control of delinquent youth and may be required to participate in the physical restraint of juveniles. The incumbent must be alert to the needs and problems of juveniles and foster a positive and rehabilitative environment. Work involves shift work and may include weekends and holidays. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Juvenile Detention Officer Supervisor and is reviewed through observation, conferences, and case records. Illustrative Duties: Supervises and guides juveniles in detention, ensuring adherence to facility rules and regulations. Conducts regular headcounts and patrols assigned areas to maintain security and order. Assists in the development and implementation of recreational, educational, and therapeutic programs. Counsels juveniles individually and in group settings, addressing behavioral and emotional issues. Observes and documents juvenile behavior and progress, reporting any significant changes to supervisors. Responds to emergencies, such as fights or medical incidents, and administers appropriate interventions. Maintains a safe and clean environment for juveniles and staff. Participates in team meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge. May be required to physically restrain juveniles in accordance with established policies and procedures. Escorts juveniles to court appearances, medical appointments, and other off-site activities. Performs related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of juvenile detention care. Considerable knowledge of the behavior patterns of adolescents and the techniques for managing difficult youth. Considerable knowledge of the principles of adolescent psychology and sociology. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with juveniles, parents, co-workers, and supervisors. Ability to observe and assess juvenile behavior and identify potential problems. Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to pass a background check and drug screening. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Two (2) years of experience in juvenile detention, corrections, or a related field involving direct care of at-risk youth. Valid Florida Driver's License. Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be at least 21 years of age. Preferred Qualifications: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. Experience with conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques. Certification in First Aid and CPR. Special Requirements: Must be able to pass a physical agility test. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation.
