Car Heat Can Kill in Minutes — Oviedo Safety Guide
Staff Writer
June 9, 2026
Temperatures inside a parked car can reach 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit on a summer day, posing a deadly risk to children and pets. A vehicle's interior heats up by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, even with a window cracked open.
Oviedo residents should adopt two habits to prevent tragedy:
Place your phone, wallet, or bag in the back seat. You'll see any child or pet when you exit the vehicle. Always check the backseat before locking the car, and keep doors locked when parked to prevent unsupervised access.
If you see a child alone in a hot car, call 911.
