Skubal Undergoes Elbow Surgery, Timetable Undetermined

Why it matters locally: The injury to Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal directly impacts the performance of Michigan's Major League Baseball team and could influence their standing in the AL Central division.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. The procedure's recovery timeline remains undisclosed, though similar cases suggest a two to three-month absence. This places Skubal's return potentially after the All-Star break in mid-July or around the August 3 trade deadline. Skubal, 29, secured a record-setting $32 million salary for 2025 through arbitration in February. This established a new high for MLB players in the arbitration system. Prior projections for his upcoming free agency approached $400 million, exceeding Yoshinobu Yamamoto's 12-year, $325 million deal with the Dodgers, signed in late 2023. Skubal's injury now introduces a new variable into these free agency expectations. Currently, Skubal holds a 3-2 record with a 2.70 ERA in the current MLB season. He participated in the World Baseball Classic, making one appearance. The Tigers, with an 18-18 record, are tied with the Guardians for the lead in the AL Central division. The White Sox trail by half a game, boosted by slugger Munetaka Murakami, who shares the MLB home run lead with Aaron Judge. The team maintains the second-best run differential in the American League despite their .500 record.
