Patricia DeGroff of Schoharie, Beloved Teacher and Mother, Dies at 97

Patricia Ann Depew DeGroff of Schoharie June 12, 1928 – May 26, 2026, was as good and loving a mom, grandmother, teacher, and person as ever lived. Her love and beautiful smile were given unconditionally. Her welcoming, happy, “any day I wake up is a good day” outlook and her self-effacing humor never wavered as she faced life with grace and gratitude.Pat was born in Glens Falls NY to Esther (Dunn) and Frank Depew. She spent part of her early childhood in New Hampshire with family returning to NY during middle school to attend and graduate from Argyle High School in 1946 and SUNY Plattsburgh in1950. She came to Schoharie to teach home economics. Soon thereafter, she met, fell in love with and married Kenneth DeGroff.Pat paused her teaching career as she and Ken started their family. Once all five children were in school she returned to Schoharie Central and was so dedicated to her students and job that she never missed a day in nearly 20 more years of teaching.Pat and Ken raised their family on Schoharie Hill where she lived for 64 years. From her home, kitchen and her classroom she blessed this world with her love through practical kindness, homemade specialties and heartfelt letters. Even as a busy working mom of five she never raised her voice, instead perfecting “the look” that would stop any child from whatever behavior she felt needed to be stopped. Though Ken passed away in 2005 she kept their home on the hill, filling it with family celebrations until 2019.A devout Christian, Pat was active in both the United Presbyterian and Schoharie Reformed Churches. In her nineties she enjoyed living with Becky and Tom in the village and then Ingersoll Place in Schenectady. She returned to Schoharie to reside with family under the care of Community Hospice. As was Pat’s way she “recovered” and no longer required Hospice services. With age comes frailty though and she was eventually readmitted for home hospice through Helios Care. In addition to her family, loving care was also provided by Ardyth, Sandy, Sue, Tina and Val. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at the home of her son Tim and his wife Angela.Pat’s spirit survives in her five children; Jeffrey (Connie) of Richmondville, Dave (Lori) of New Smyrna Beach FL, Becky (Tom Hitter) of Schoharie, Timothy (Angela) of Schoharie and Kip (Vicki) of Middleburgh, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandsons, her sister Colleen Towle of Chester NH and many nieces and nephews.In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Pat’s memory to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, the Schoharie Reformed Church or a charity of your choice. On Sunday, June 7th at 1 PM Pat’s life will be celebrated at the Schoharie Reformed Church 258 Main Street Schoharie NY. The Langan Funeral Home of Schoharie and the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home of Cobleskill are assisting the DeGroff family.

Judith O'Connor of Cobleskill Dies at 86

Cobleskill (Schoharie County): Judith Elizabeth (Tracy) O’Connor, of Cobleskill, NY passed away peacefully Monday, May 25th at the Palatine Nursing Home at the age of 86.Mrs. O’Connor was born October 20, 1939 in Albany, NY a daughter of Arthur and Edith (DuBois) Tracy. A 1957 graduate of Albany High School, she was married on February 6, 1960 to Joseph Vincent O’Connor of Saratoga Springs, culminating in having six children together.Judith was primarily a stay-at-home mother to her six children and held various jobs at times. She enjoyed her time as a Sunday School Teacher at the United Methodist Church of Cobleskill. She was very talented at arts and crafts where she enjoyed drawing, sewing, and crochet. She also enjoyed writing, card games, playing board games such as Backgammon, Othello, and her favorite being Sorry, which she frequently played with her kids and grandchildren. Quick witted and insightful, she could always be counted on to hand down a one liner that would settle any conversation often followed by robust laughter by all.Judith was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert DuBois Tracy, her husband Joseph, and her daughter, Tracy Elizabeth Cleveland.Survivors include: her sons; Jim (Pam) O’Connor of Virginia Beach, VA, Jeff (Pam) O’Connor of Cobleskill, Rob O’Connor of Chesapeake, VA, and Gary (Karen) O’Connor of Cobleskill, her daughter, Kerry O’Connor of Ft. Myers, FL, son-in-law; William Cleveland of Cobleskill, grandchildren; Sarah (Sean) Grady, Lydia O’Connor, Hope O’Connor, Ben O’Connor, Angela (David) Ramirez, Nick (Sabrina) Duda, Kaitlyn O’Connor, Owen O’Connor, Garrett O’Connor, Great Grandchildren; Genesis Grady and George Thom along with several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.Services will be held privately for family members. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Judith to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, PO Box 40, Howes Cave, NY 12092.The Robert A. Charlotte Marks of Schoharie Dies at 93

Schoharie (Schoharie County): Charlotte F. Marks 93, of the Birches, formerly of Fair Street, Schoharie, NY, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2026 under the loving care of family, aides, nurses, and hospice.Charlotte was born August 4, 1932 in Roxbury, NY, a daughter of Peter and Gertrude (Short) Leming. She graduated from Margaretville High School and later, attended the Albany Business College. She worked for Protective Loan Corp. in Albany for a time, prior to her marriage to Glen on September 18, 1954. Charlotte and Glen settled in Schoharie where she became active in her community as a communicant of the former St. Joseph’s R.C. Church serving as Eucharistic Minister and Reader, among other duties. She later attended Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church in Delanson after the closing of St. Joseph’s. Charlotte was a member of Schoharie Colonial Heritage where she was known for her famous Chocolate Chip Cake. She had an artisticflair that was present in many facets of her life. Charlotte loved collecting antiques, drawing portraits, decorating her home, and tending to her flower gardens. Most importantly, Charlotte enjoyed her social life that included a vast array of lifelong friendships.Her husband Glen, passed away October 2, 2006. Survivors include: her sons; Kevin Marks of Schoharie, Stephen (Terry) Marks of Albany and Brian (Kimberly) Marks of Spring Hill. Florida, her grandchildren; Elliot Marks, Kelsey Marks, Karen Marks, Austin Marks, Christopher Stiles, Jason Stiles, and Michelle Stiles and several great grandchildren. Charlotte was predeceased by her sister, Carol Petruskevich and her niece, Joanne.Calling hours will be held from 10AM to 12Noon on Friday, May 29th at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main Street Schoharie followed by a prayer service with burial at the Old Stone Fort Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Charlotte to Scho-Wright Ambulance Service, PO Box 325, Schoharie, NY 12157.Charlotte’s family extends their gratitude to all the visiting nurses, aide’s and Helios Care for helping Charlotte enjoy her day’s while still living independently.

This meeting will be held in the Large Group Instruction (LGI) room at Guilderland High School and is open to the public. Members of the GCSD community are welcome to attend and are encouraged to voice their ideas, questions and concerns.
