Tribal Gaming Regulator Lacks Chairperson Amid Industry Growth

The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC), the federal regulatory body for tribal casinos, operates without a chairperson. This vacancy persists as the tribal gambling industry reported record revenues in 2023, reaching $46 billion.

This $46 billion figure represents nearly three times the annual casino revenue of Nevada. The NIGC holds responsibility for upholding the integrity of tribal gaming operations across the United States. Its mandate includes ensuring tribal casinos comply with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) of 1988.

Without a permanent chairperson, the commission faces limitations in its enforcement capabilities. This leadership gap affects the agency's ability to fully execute its duties. The NIGC's structure requires a chairperson to lead its operations and decision-making processes.
