Michigan Primaries Offer Look at Democratic Party Direction

On August 4, voters in Michigan will participate in primary elections that could indicate the direction of the Democratic Party. Multiple competitive congressional races are on the ballot. Other states, including Missouri, Kansas, Washington, and Arizona, also hold primaries that day.

Michigan's 3rd Congressional District features a Democratic primary contest between state Rep. Jon Hoadley and attorney Hillary Scholten. The winner will face Republican Rep. Justin Amash, who previously left the Republican Party and is seeking re-election as a Libertarian.

In the 13th Congressional District, several Democratic candidates are vying for the nomination. The district is located in Detroit. Candidates include Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones, and attorney Brenda Perryman.

Missouri voters will choose nominees for the state's gubernatorial race. The Democratic field includes State Auditor Nicole Galloway. On the Republican side, candidates include Gov. Mike Parson, State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick, and attorney Bill Eigel.

Kansas holds primaries for its two U.S. Senate seats. In the Republican primary, Congressman Roger Marshall and Kris Kobach are among the candidates. The Democratic primary for the Senate seat features Barbara Bollier.

Washington state voters will participate in a top-two primary system for its gubernatorial election. Gov. Jay Inslee is seeking re-election. Other candidates include Republicans Loren Culp and Joshua Freed. The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election.

Arizona's primary elections include a race for the U.S. Senate. Democrat Mark Kelly is running unopposed for his party's nomination. On the Republican side, candidates include Martha McSally and Daniel McCarthy. Voters will also select nominees for several congressional districts, including the 1st Congressional District, where Republican Tiffany Shedd is challenging incumbent Rep. Tom O'Halleran.
