Report: Free School Meal Students Face Widening Academic Gap

LONDON – Students who qualify for free school meals demonstrate a widening academic gap when compared to their more affluent classmates, according to a recent report by the Education Policy Institute (EPI).

The EPI report highlights that the educational achievement disparity for these students began to increase even before the COVID-19 pandemic, a trend that accelerated during the subsequent school disruptions.

According to the EPI, by the time students from disadvantaged backgrounds complete their GCSE examinations, they are, on average, 1.6 years of learning behind their peers who do not qualify for free school meals. The report states this gap has increased by 0.2 years since 2019.

Natalie Perera, Chief Executive of the Education Policy Institute, commented on the findings. "Our latest research shows that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are falling further behind their peers," Perera said. Perera urged the new prime minister to address this issue with "laser-like focus."

The EPI’s analysis suggests the ongoing academic underperformance of disadvantaged pupils could have long-term consequences, impacting their future employment and economic prospects.

The report recommends immediate and targeted interventions from the government to reverse these trends and reduce educational inequalities.
