Senate Intelligence Committee's Top Democrat Questions Pulte's Intelligence Director Role

Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, raised concerns about Bill Pulte's transition to acting director of national intelligence.

Warner discussed the appointment with NPR's Steve Inskeep, noting reservations about Pulte's background for the role. The senator did not elaborate specific concerns in the exchange, focusing instead on the significance of the position within the federal government's intelligence apparatus.

Pulte previously served as chief executive of a mortgage company. He assumed the acting director position following a vacancy in the role, which requires Senate confirmation for permanent appointment.

The director of national intelligence oversees the nation's 18 intelligence agencies and serves as the principal intelligence advisor to the president. Senate Intelligence Committee members, including Warner, review nominees and monitor the intelligence community's operations.

Warner's comments mark the first public statement from a top Senate Democrat regarding Pulte's appointment. The committee will determine whether to schedule confirmation hearings or request additional information from the appointee.

Republican members of the committee have not publicly commented on Pulte's transition to the acting role. The position's importance to national security policy places it among the government's most sensitive posts.
