Sinkhole Confirmed Cause of Rialto Apartments Evacuations, New Report Shows

A new engineering report confirmed a sinkhole caused a building at the Rialto Apartments to slowly sink, leading to mass evacuations in March. Approximately 200 families were ordered out of the complex after structural instability became apparent.

The findings from the report answer questions about the cause of the damage that forced residents from their homes. The structural issues prompted a significant emergency response and left many residents displaced.

Orange County Fire Rescue responded to the Rialto Apartments in March after a resident reported difficulty opening her front door and heard "popping noises." Crews found significant cracking and a large gap beneath the building upon arrival. They had to force the resident's door open to ensure her safety before beginning the evacuation of the building.

The Rialto management stated they helped nearly all 200 families relocate following the incident. However, at least one unsettled lawsuit related to the structural failure remains ongoing.
