The World Health Organization (WHO) has asked Russia for more information regarding the death of a laboratory worker in Siberia on Oct. 2, 2026. The UN health agency awaits clarification on the exact cause of death and the infection route, raising concerns about potential plague exposure.

Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO director of Epidemic and Pandemic Management, said the agency does not know the "causative agent" behind the death. Russia's public health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, reported that extensive testing showed no evidence the worker contracted any pathogens from her work at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. Russian authorities stated the worker died of pneumonia, a typical acute respiratory viral infection, and confirmed no recent plague cases in the region.

Despite official statements, the incident has been marked by secrecy. Rospotrebnadzor initially diagnosed the worker with "pneumonia of unknown etiology." Unconfirmed media reports suggested pneumonic plague, a severe and transmissible form of the disease, as a possible cause. The lab worker, identified by the outlet Lyudi Baikala as 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, reportedly sought hospitalization on Sept. 29, 2026, with cold symptoms and died three days later in Shelekhov, near Irkutsk.

The WHO requested further details to clarify the cause of the severe pneumonia and the pathogen that prompted public health measures. Russian authorities informed the WHO that preventive measures, including contact tracing and medical monitoring, were conducted, and tests on contacts revealed no dangerous infectious disease pathogens. The WHO also inquired about media reports of a second employee experiencing pneumonia of undetermined cause.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov directed all questions to Rospotrebnadzor, which maintains the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Irkutsk region is calm.
