J.C. Newman Cigar Co. held a two-day hiring event to bring in 100 workers for its upcoming hotel, restaurant, and cigar lounge in Ybor City. The first session took place Tuesday. The second ran on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the El Reloj factory. Three new venues will launch in about nine weeks across from America’s last working cigar factory. The Inn at El Reloj will be a boutique hotel. Elaine’s will serve American food. Stanford’s Cigar Club will be a lounge for cigar enthusiasts. The company seeks to fill 100 hospitality jobs. Openings cover cooks, dishwashers, bartenders, and back-office workers. “We’re recruiting 100 people to help us tell the story of Tampa’s history as Cigar City,” said Drew Newman, fourth-generation owner of J.C. Newman Cigar Co., according to FOX 13. These businesses will occupy the historic Sanchez y Haya Building. That structure opened in 1910 and served cigar workers, neighbors, and visitors of Ybor City for years before sitting empty for decades. The Newman family intervened to restore it. This project preserves Tampa’s cigar-making past. “The cigar industry built the city of Tampa 140 years ago, and it’s our privilege to keep this tradition alive and to share it with future generations,” Drew Newman told FOX 13. It happened in the second-floor hospitality room of the El Reloj factory at 2701 N. 16th St. in Tampa. Applicants can also submit applications online through the company’s careers page. The post J.C.
