The Three-Second Space Between a Request and Your Yes

You don’t need to become a boundary-enforcing robot. Start with one small habit: stop answering requests on reflex.

Today's Affirmation

I give myself time to decide before I commit.

The Intention

A surprising number of our “yeses” happen before we’ve actually made a decision. Someone asks you to take on a task, attend an event, lend something, or solve a problem, and your mouth says yes while the rest of you is still loading. The result is often resentment, overcommitment, or that uniquely miserable sentence: “Why did I agree to this?”

Today, practice inserting a small pause before answering. It doesn’t need to be dramatic. Try: “Let me check and get back to you,” or “I need a minute to think about that.” This gives your actual capacity—not your reflexes, guilt, or fear of disappointing someone—a chance to speak.

The pause is not rejection. It is information-gathering. You can ask yourself: Do I want to do this? Do I have the time and energy? If I say yes, what am I quietly saying no to? That last question is especially useful because every commitment spends something, even when the currency is just your Saturday afternoon and the ability to sit silently with a snack.

Morning Practice

Say this out loud once, even if you’re alone: “Let me think about it and get back to you.” Practice the words until they feel ordinary. You’re not preparing for a courtroom drama; you’re making a useful sentence easier to reach for when someone asks you for more than you can comfortably give.

Evening Reflection

Where today did I answer automatically, and what might I have learned if I had given myself a little more time?
