U.S., Canada Conduct Negotiations Over Potential Tariffs

Why it matters locally: California's diverse economy, including its significant agricultural and manufacturing sectors, could see impacts from new tariffs on Canadian goods. Businesses that import Canadian products or export to Canada may face altered supply chains and increased costs.

Officials from the United States and Canada are conducting last-minute negotiations. These discussions precede a potential implementation of tariffs by the U.S. government. The proposed tariffs, if enacted, would amount to 50% on $20 billion worth of Canadian products. The range of Canadian goods subject to these potential tariffs includes items such as hockey sticks and tongue depressors. The U.S. government has indicated it would impose these tariffs if a deal is not reached between the two nations. These negotiations represent an effort to resolve trade differences and avoid the economic impact of the tariffs. Both countries have engaged in a series of discussions in recent weeks regarding trade policies.
