Houthi Forces Seize Strategic Port City of Mokha in Yemen

Why it matters locally: The seizure of Mokha, a port city on the Bab al-Mandab strait, could impact global shipping routes, potentially affecting supply chains and trade for California businesses that rely on maritime transport through the Red Sea and Suez Canal.

Houthi forces have gained control of the port city of Mokha in Yemen. The city sits on the Bab al-Mandab strait, a key maritime passage connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The Houthis took control of Mokha from groups allied with Yemen's internationally recognized government. This action marks a change in control over a strategic location within the ongoing conflict in Yemen. The Bab al-Mandab strait represents a critical chokepoint for international shipping. It serves as a gateway to the Red Sea, through which a significant volume of global maritime trade passes. Journalist Nick Schifrin reported on the development.
