St. Thomas University to Host 'ALL’S QUIET ON 62ND STREET,' Solo Exhibition by Miami Native Charles Eugene Humes Jr.

Opa Locka residents will have the opportunity to experience a major solo art exhibition by Miami native Charles Eugene Humes Jr. at St. Thomas University's Sardiñas Gallery. The exhibition, titled 'ALL’S QUIET ON 62ND STREET,' will open on Saturday, October 17, 2026, and run through January 8, 2027.

This exhibition offers a profound visual exploration of contemporary social themes, focusing on the complex psyche and varied states of the Black experience. Humes employs a realist-minimalist methodology, blending collage, drawing, painting, and mixed media to capture poignant human conditions such as homelessness, depression, gun violence, and loss. His work often features figurative natural and mechanical forms, which he uses to document, examine, and honor the nuances of African-American life.

Charles Eugene Humes Jr. brings over 40 years of experience as a master draftsman, painter, and muralist to this exhibition. A Miami native with Bahamian heritage, Humes holds degrees from Florida State University and Florida International University. His distinguished career includes national and regional accolades, such as a Smithsonian Southern Arts Fellowship and an Ellies Creator Award, recognizing his powerful depictions of the African-American condition.

Humes's paintings, drawings, and large-scale public mosaic murals have been widely exhibited in major galleries, museums, and universities across the United States. The upcoming exhibition at St. Thomas University marks a significant homecoming for the artist, celebrating his continued impact on the American art landscape. The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sardiñas Gallery, located on the St. Thomas University campus.
