A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for West Carteret, East Carteret, and Coastal Onslow counties, effective from 8:00 AM EDT this morning until 8:00 PM EDT tonight, October 11.
The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City NC warns of dangerous rip currents along beaches from Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City. These rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers into deeper water. The most likely time for strong rip currents is a couple of hours around low tide, which is expected around 3:00 PM today.
If you are caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim parallel to the shoreline. If you become tired, float or tread water until you are out of the rip current. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
